A WHITBURN travel boss has scooped a top award.

John Hays, of Hays Travel, which has branches in South Tyneside, was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Globe Travel Awards.

The award recognises someone who has made a significant contribution to the UK travel industry.

On collecting the award, a shocked Mr Hays said: "I am very proud, and feel really emotional in collecting this. I have great staff and I am very proud of everyone."

The honour is the latest in a string of awards collected by Mr Hays.

In 2002 he won the 2002 Wearside and Durham Business Executive of the Year award, was crowned the first Entrepreneur of the Year for the Entrepreneurs' Forum in 2004, and last year was included in a list of the 500 most influential people in North East England.

His company has 34 shops throughout the region.
