THE future of the Old Town Hall, in South Shields Market Place, remains up in the air, a new report reveals.
A scheme has been identified to use the first floor as an office, in conjunction with English Heritage.
But funding for the project is not in place.
Planning officers have ruled out a more public use of the building as it cannot be adapted to meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.
A report presented to members of the council's regeneration and resources committee this week concludes: "Unfortunately, no external sources of funding are available to undertake the conversion, and, given the small size of the building, it is not considered a priority in the council's rationalisation of its buildings.
"However, the scheme has been prepared, and if external funding becomes available, the project can be pursued."
