Tyne bridge is 80 today

THE iconic Tyne Bridge celebrates its 80th birthday today.
It was designed by Mott, Hay and Anderson, who based their design on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and work started in 1925.

On October 10, 1928, it was opened by King George V and Queen Mary who were the first to use the Newcastle -Gateshead crossing in their Ascot landau carriage.

It cost £1.2m to build.
