FED-up villagers want an eyesore building to be flattened without delay.

A developer won permission back in 2005 to demolish the Bank Top Garage in Addison Road, West Boldon.

The plan was to build a new housing development on the site.

But three years later, the building is still standing – and has been labelled a "blot on the landscape" by angry residents.

Because of the time that has elapsed, Darlington-based Leftbank Developments has to re-apply for Conservation Area Consent to demolish it.

And residents fear the former garage could be "left to rot" again if permission is granted.

They say the site is overgrown with weeds and has become a target for vandals.

The flat roof part is also a dumping ground for dog waste while walls are covered in graffiti.

South Tyneside Council's planning committee will be recommended to grant approval of the application when it meets on Monday.

Members will be told the council does not have powers to ensure the developer carries out immediate demolition.

However, a notice has been served to secure improvements to the area as demolition work is awaited. This would include boarding up windows, painting boards and removing graffiti.

A report to the committee says: "In response to the delay in the commencement of the demolition works, the applicant's agent has stated that there is no current interest in the site.

"Therefore it is not in the interest of the client to spend money on demolition in the absence of a sale, especially in the current housing market climate."

One disgruntled resident said: "If the permission to extend the demolition period is granted, the area will have to put up with the sight of this derelict building for another three years."

The planning committee is to meet at 10am in the committee suite at South Shields Town Hall.
