JOBS BOOST ... Coun Alan Kerr with Paul Black, seated left, and Michael Ord, centre, with Ashleigh Jones, left, young persons lead at Services for Young People.

A NEW employment-boosting event in South Tyneside proved the write stuff with local jobseekers.

The first in a series of fortnightly employment training and advice sessions was held at Jarrow Library.

Aimed at young people and adults of all ages, the sessions will provide guidance about finding work, training and general careers advice.

A wealth of information was available on everything from apprenticeship schemes to job searches, and from writing a CV to tax credit and childcare support.

Local agencies Family Works and Services for Young People are working with South Tyneside Libraries Service to deliver the advice sessions, which were devised by library staff, who recognised the needs of Jarrow jobseekers.

Coun Alan Kerr, deputy leader of South Tyneside Council, said: “It was encouraging to see a number of people attending the employment training and advice sessions, from young people planning their future to grandparents looking for information on behalf of their grand-daughter.

“The regular events will be a valuable resource for local people, aiming to point them in the right career direction.”

South Tyneside Council is currently delivering a successful apprenticeship and wage subsidy programme, that provides young people aged 18 to 24 with the chance of gaining vital workplace experience.

South Tyneside Homes also provides an apprenticeship scheme, giving people a chance of getting on the first rung of the employment ladder.

The next dates for the employment training and advice sessions will be at Jarrow Library on April 12 and 26, between 10am and noon.

The sessions will take place every other Friday at Jarrow Library, in Cambrian Street, between 10am and noon. Call Jarrow Library for more details on 489 7786.
