SOUTH Tyneside winter wonder Amanda Lightfoot was off target in her first shot at Olympic glory.
The former St Wilfrid’s RC Primary School took part in the energy-sapping 7.5km sprint biathlon competition today, which combines cross country skiing skills with shooting prowess.
A top 60 performance would have earned her a place in Tuesday’s 10km pursuit, which mixes four bouts of shooting as well as complete a longer course.
But her finishing time of 24 minutes and 48.9 seconds in front of a packed crowd in Sochi was only good enough to cross the line 75th out of 84 competitors.
But the talented 27-year-old’s Olympic dream isn’t over just yet, as she will compete in the 15km individual race on Friday.
Amanda, who only took up the unique sport while serving with the army in Iraq, has been making the most of her Russian adventure.
She tweeted after Friday’s Opening Ceremony: “Wow!!! What an opening ceremony and the best moment of my life so far.
“Walking on that stage in front of thousands of people .
“So proud to be representing Team GB !!!”
Look out for a full report will be in Monday’s Shields Gazette.
