VULNERABLE children in South Tyneside could bank on a happy Christmas.

Staff and customers at Barclays Bank in King Street, South Shields, pulled out all the stops for the children’s charity Barnardo’s.

They collected about 40 new gifts, including a bicycle, footballs and various games for youngsters up to the age of 16.

The goodies were collected by staff from the charity’s office at Chichester in South Shields, for distribution across the borough.

Samantha Tiffin, a personal banker at Barclays, said: “The gifts went to children in families affected by such issues as alcohol abuse, HIV and drugs.

“It’s part of our efforts to reach out into the community.”
