A SOUTH Tyneside charity is calling on fundraisers to brave the chill of the North Sea this Christmas.

St Clare’s Hospice is looking for people to take part in its annual Boxing Day Dip.

More than 100 people took the plunge last year in aid of the charity, based in Primrose Terrace, Jarrow.

St Clare’s provides palliative care to the people of South Tyneside with life-limiting illnesses and relies heavily on fundraising.

The charity has opened the dip to children this year in the hope that families will take part together.

St Clare’s fundraiser Christine Rowell said: “We’d like to see as many people as possible join us for the Boxing Day Dip.

“As it’s the first year we’ve opened up the event to children, we’re hoping that it’ll be a fun day for all the family.

“Even if you don’t take part you can come and support the brave people who do, and it’s all in aid of a great local cause.”

The dip is open to anyone aged eight and over, and many people choose to don fancy dress to take part.

It will be held on Thursday, December 26, at the lifeguard station near the Sand Dancer pub, in Coast Road, South Shields.

Registration begins at 11am.

A best dressed competition will also be held, with the winners being announced just before brave participants run into the freezing water.

Anyone wishing to take part should contact the fundraising team for a leaflet, or pick one up from any of the St Clare’s shops around South Tyneside.

Registration forms must be completed and returned to the hospice before dippers begin collecting sponsorships.

St Clare’s has been providing care to the local community since 1987.

It offers a range of services for patients and their families, following a holistic approach that aims to address not just physical symptoms, but also spiritual and emotional needs as well.

Anyone interested in taking part in the Boxing Day Dip or making a donation to St Clare’s should call 451 6400, visit www.stclareshospice.co.uk or e-mail fundraising@stclareshospice.co.uk for more information.
