The new jobs will be mainly sales and customer service roles, with recruiters keen to attract applicants from across the borough and further afield.

Farooq Hakim, BT’s regional director for the North East, said: “Back in March we set out to recruit 50 people in the South Tyneside area and thanks to the high calibre of applicants actually recruited nearer to 60.

“Following on from that success we are now looking for a further 70 people to join us.

“This is the perfect opportunity for someone with a genuine passion for brilliant customer service who is looking for a secure, well-paid and flexible job with long term career prospects and excellent training in one of the UK’s top companies.”

This latest recruitment will expand BT’s involvement in the regeneration of the borough, which is centred on the strategic partnership between the firm and South Tyneside Council.

South Tyneside Council leader Coun Iain Malcolm said: “Creating more job opportunities is a key priority for the council as we work with our partners to reduce unemployment levels and create the right conditions for business growth and investment across the Borough.

“Our partnership with BT continues to be a major success story and one which is helping us to realise our ambition of bringing high quality jobs to South Tyneside.”

Successful applicants will be answering calls and talking to customers from across the UK, providing them with information on the products and packages which best suit their needs.

In return they will receive a starting salary of £17,983 rising to £19,981 after nine months plus bonus, flexible shifts, 22 days paid holidays plus eight bank holidays, pension and sharesave schemes and free BT Broadband and discounts on mobile products.
