A BANK in South Shields will close its doors today.
Barclays is closing its branch in Boldon Lane, saying the decision is due to fewer people using the facility.
The decision comes as a blow for customers who live in the Tyne Dock area of South Shields, as the elderly and disabled will now have to travel further to use another branch.
A spokesman for Barclays said there will be no job losses, and letters explaining the closure have been sent to customers.
He added: “Usage has decreased.
“The decision to close the Tyne Dock branch on Boldon Lane has not been taken lightly, and we appreciate that it may inconvenience some customers.
“There are regular changes as we work, to ensure we have branches where customers need and use them.
“This often means opening or refurbishing a branch, but occasionally the decision is made to close a branch, for example where there is low customer use.
“There will be no job losses from this closure.
“All staff will be relocated to other local branches.”
Barclays has two other branches in South Shields: in King Street and Prince Edward Road, and a third in Ellison Street in Jarrow.
The spokesman added: “We will work hard to minimise the impact on customers, and will help them with the change to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible.
“One alternative to the branch is the arrangement we have in place, in which customers are able to pay in and take out cash, free of charge, at the local post office.”
