A FORMER teacher is hoping to cook up some success after officially opening her first cake shop.
Carla Gray has opened the doors to Cake My Day in Dean Road, South Shields.
The 30-year-old, from Westoe, previously ran her baking business out of a commercial unit at Tedco Business Centre in Jarrow.
But now that she has her own shop front, she says she won’t be going back to the way things were.
Carla said: “It’s amazing having my own shop.
“It’s hard work, but it’s amazing.”
Carla used to take orders from her customers over her website and Facebook page, and bake them at her Tedco unit.
But now she can meet her customers face-to-face, and they can even watch her decorate her delicious creations in the store.
She also has an outdoor seating area, where people can enjoy a cake and a cuppa.
She said: “I love being able to talk to my customers, and I’ve had a lot of interest from passers-by. I thought I’d get most of my business from kids. But I’ve had a lot of older people coming in who say they love my shop because there’s nothing else like it around the town.
“I’d love my own tearoom and opening the shop has spurred me on for that even more.”
Carla celebrated the opening by hosting a coffee morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, and raised more than £250.
Cake My Day is open from 10.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and from 9am to 2pm on Saturdays.
Orders can be placed for birthday, wedding and other celebration cakes at www.cakemd.co.uk or by calling Carla on 908 7008.
