CHIP shop chiefs are celebrating after reeling in another award.
Colmans, on Ocean Road, South Shields, has joined the fish-frying elite from across the UK, by scooping the prestigious Fish and Chip Quality Award.
It is the only shop in South Tyneside to receive this award.
The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) is the trade body that represents the nation’s fish and chip shops, and runs the scheme as a way of raising standards within the trade and enhancing the inudstry’s profile.
The scheme is a way of rewarding and promoting shops that provide good quality products and high standards of hygiene, as well as friers who show a high level of competence.
Richard Ord, the fourth-generation owner of the family business, said: “Colmans are delighted to gain this prestigious award.
“It shows our commitment to providing only the very best fish and chips to all our valued customers”.
To qualify, each shop has to go through an inspection by an NFFF approved assessor who judges the shop’s presentation, hygiene and cleanliness, staff training, equipment, frying and sales skills and, most importantly, the quality of the product.
Each award is valid for two years and retention is dependent on standards being maintained as validated by NFFF officials and assessors.
In September, multi-award-winning Colmans kept its honour as the only eating place in South Tyneside to be included in the 2012 edition of the prestigious Good Food Guide, Taste of Britain after being included last year.
