A GRAPHIC designer in South Tyneside is drawing up plans for a successful business.
After working for a series of firms for more than 20 years, Gary Buckingham has branched out into self-employment.
GB Design Studio was launched in South Shields just a matter of weeks ago, but is already winning work from companies stretching from Tyneside to London.
Mr Buckingham, 38, a married man with a son, trained at Newcastle School of Art and Design.
After gaining a degree in art and design, he worked as a graphic designer for several North East companies. When he eventually turned freelance, his contracts included a brochure and flyers for South Tyneside Council.
But after another spell working for clothing company Visage, Mr Buckingham decided to pursue his long-term ambition to launch his own business.
He said: “I always had it in the back of my mind to become self-employed, and I had the chance last summer, after being asked to relocate to Manchester by my former employer.
“But I had family commitments in the North East and didn’t want to do that, so it gave me the perfect opportunity to launch GB Design Studio.”
Thankfully, the commercial gamble paid off, with work starting to roll in from across the UK.
“I did not go into this ‘cold’, as I already had contacts through my previous graphic design work and one company was actually chasing me to complete a project.
“I’m working on a complete new identity package for a Newcastle business management team and am confident the work will keep coming,” Mr Buckingham added.
Practical business advice from Tedco in South Tyneside proved useful and Mr Buckingham is already looking ahead to future expansion.
He added: “If the work keeps rolling in, I will probably have to take on another one or two people in the next year or so and maybe also think about getting a unit after that.”
