MOTORISTS have been warned that one of the North East’s busiest roads will be closed tonight for the installation of emergency roadworks.
The A1 southbound carriageway will be closed from 8pm tonight between Lobley Hill and Kingsway to allow for narrow lanes to be installed.
The closure will last until 6am tomorrow, when the reduced lanes will come into operation.
They will mean that larger vehicles, particularly HGVs, will be limited to lane one.
Narrow lanes are being put in place to allow for emergency geotechnical investigations, and work to reinforce and stabilise the bank and prevent possible movement.
A Highways Agency spokesperson said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this emergency carriageway closure, which is needed for us to install narrow lanes.”
