DEMOLITION work has started on two former garages as part of the £100m South Shields 365 plan to transform the town centre.
Work has begun to demolish the Tyneside Car Sales (formerly D’Ambrosie) and Streamline garages at the back of nearby Fowler Street.
The plan is for the creation of a large new retail quarter in the area within five to seven years.
A South Tyneside Council spokesman said: “The demolition of the D’Ambrosie Tyne Car Sales and Streamline buildings has been an aspiration of the council’s for a number of years, given the state of the properties and the impact they’ve had on the surrounding area.
“After the council recently acquired the buildings, the process is now progressing with the demolition being implemented as part of the town centre’s regeneration plans for South Shields 365.
“Workmen are currently onsite for a planned three month demolition programme that should be complete by the end of May.
“The buildings are partially cleared with the immediate work underway to remove any hazardous materials in preparation for the final stages.”
