TWO firms are making waves after joining forces to tackle flooding problems across South Tyneside.
Jarrow MP Stephen Hepburn saw how the two borough businesses are coming together to create an innovative flood defence product.
Mr Hepburn visited AH Engineering Ltd, based at Wagonway Industrial Estate, Hebburn, to see a unique flood protection product created by Watergate Flood Solutions Ltd.
Last month, Watergate’s innovative flood barrier for residential and commercial doors, which is manufactured at AH Engineering, received British Standard Institute Accreditation. This made Watergate one of only a handful of companies in Britain to hold this coveted standard.
During his visit, Mr Hepburn met with staff at AH Engineering and Watergate Flood Solutions, and said he was “impressed” with the innovative work being carried out in his constituency and with both firms’ plans for the future.
Watergate, based in Station Road, Hebburn, was established in November 2012, and has been seeking accreditation to push its business forward.
The company offers flood protection products to safeguard residential properties, plus shops and businesses.
AH Engineering is a family-owned business, which was set up in 1986, and currently employs 30 people.
Alongside its partnership with Watergate, the Hebburn company covers tool-making, sheet metal work, general fabrication and welding.
Mr Hepburn said: “It was a pleasure to meet staff at AH Engineering Ltd and Watergate Flood Solutions Ltd in Hebburn, and it is extremely pleasing to see these two local companies working together to create this innovative flood defence product.
“Areas across South Tyneside have been hit by flash flooding in recent years, and I sincerely hope that this product will help protect residential properties, shops and businesses against flooding at present and in the future.”
