A tasty business aims to get its customers’ mouths watering by opening up a permanent site in South Tyneside.
Dessert delivery service The Cakeaway is gearing up to officially open its doors to the public this weekend, off the back of its successful mobile business in the borough.
Owner and manager Jo Bell, 24, decided to open the shop in Stanhope Road, South Shields, after a successful start-up sparked by her own love of desserts.
She said: “We have been running our dessert delivery takeaway business since September last year, but now we also have our own premises.
“It has come about as we have done so well in the last few months.
“We decided to try a shop. We will have four members of staff working in the shop and six delivery drivers.”
On leaving school at 16, the business entrepreneur worked in customer sales and team support at various call centres across the region, but always maintained her interest in the dessert and catering industry.
She added: “I have lived in South Shields all my life, but moved to Gateshead for two years, where there was a popular dessert delivery company.
“I used to order from there all of the time.
“When I moved back to South Shields I noticed there wasn’t anything like it.
“I spotted a gap in the market, so I thought I would give it a try.
“It’s turned out to be really popular.”
The store will open tomorrow, from 11am to 4pm, and expects to see about 600 people coming along and be treated to a free slice of cake and class of fizz, as they celebrate the new enterprise.
The business sells various different types of cakes and desserts and delivers across South Tyneside.
