METRO ... the system was brought to a halt by a major power outage.

THE Tyne & Wear Metro system ground to a halt this morning after a major power failure.

At about 10.45am there was a power cut in the South Gosforth area, which affected the Metro control room.

This meant signalling and radios couldn’t be used across the system, so trains were stopped until a connection was re-established.

A Metro spokesman said: “The trains were held back for about 15 minutes. The cause of the power cut is under investigation.

“All trains are now running again, but they are subject to delays.”
