SOUTH Shields MP Emma-Lewell Buck has signed the Gazette petition expressing dismay over Marks & Spencer’s plans to close its King Street store.
Mrs Lewell-Buck has been left disheartened by the retail giant’s decision to shut the store after 80 years of trading and transfer its 37 staff across the river to Silverlink in North Tyneside.
The Labour MP put her name to the petition, also calling on M&S to return to the borough at the earliest opportunity, on Saturday.
She held crisis talks with company officials after they announced the King Street store would close on Saturday, March 29.
Mrs Lewell-Buck said: “They told me that the old store needs so much investment and modernisation that it’s not worth spending the money, given its customer base.
“I asked if it would consider getting involved in the 365 regeneration plan for the town, and all it said was that it will keep all options open.”
