The Port of Tyne has appointed a new non-executive director.

David Appleton has held a variety of senior positions with some of the world’s largest shipping lines, including United States Lines, Sea-Land and APL.

He was recently senior vice president for liner trade management worldwide with global container shipping company APL in Singapore.

Mr Appleton spent his early career in the merchant navy and gained his first mate’s qualification at South Shields Marine College and a degree in maritime studies at Liverpool John Moores University.

He said: “I am delighted to be joining the Port of Tyne at such an exciting time, when there is great potential for further growth, building on its global reputation for excellence.

“I look forward to being part of the board, and bringing my experience in the marine and shipping sector to help shape the port’s future business strategy.”

Sir Les Elton, chairman of the Port of Tyne, said: “David brings a wealth of knowledge in global shipping, commercial business acumen and worldwide trading, providing terrific experience, and I know he will be an excellent addition to the board.”
