A NEW Italian restaurant has opened for business at historic Jarrow Civic Hall – and created new jobs.
Martino’s recently took over from the former Sir Charlie’s Italian restaurant in the Victorian complex, in Ellison Street.
The move follows expansion by Shore Leisure Ltd, owners of Martino’s at Seaburn and Seaham.
New jobs being created by the move include front of house members and kitchen staff.
Business pair Fiona Leng and Wendy Donkin will run the new-look eating space in central Jarrow, which is already attracting diners from across South Tyneside.
Wendy said: “We have many loyal customers who travel across the water to dine with us, so we’re over the moon to be able to bring Martino’s to them.
“Jarrow can expect fantastic food, fabulous service, and all of the great offers, happy hour specials, drink and cocktails that we’re famous for.
“It’s a very exciting time for us all. It’s a great thing for people who are currently looking for work too, as we will be recruiting, so we are also helping the economy.”
Owner Gavin Leng said: “We’ve been looking for a venue in South Tyneside for quite some time, so when the space became available in the elegant Jarrow Civic Hall, we knew it would be perfect.”
Apart from a wide range of Italian food – from pasta to pizzas and steak dishes – Martino’s in Jarrow will also serve Sunday lunches.
John Knowles, proprietor of Jarrow Civic Hall, which he has revamped over the last 18 months, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Martino’s have decided to purchase the restaurant space.
“I’m certain that Gavin, Fiona, Wendy and their team will make every success of their latest venture within Jarrow Civic Hall.”
