DRIVERS were queuing at the petrol pumps today as fears mount of a strike by tanker drivers.

Long queues of cars snaked around garage forecourts, including those at Morrisons in Jarrow and Asda in Boldon Colliery.

Pickets will descend on the Shell UK oil terminal in Jarrow if a strike goes ahead. Unite union leaders have less than 24 hours to declare strike action if they aim to hit the Easter holidays.

Meanwhile, the Government has admitted it was a mistake to advise the public to store petrol in jerry cans, with ministers saying they didn’t realise the containers could hold up to 20 litres.
