A FISH frier is proving he’s a chip off the old block after getting a promotion in the family business.

Award-winning chippy Colmans of South Shields has now officially become a fifth-generation business after Richard Ord Jr was given a new title.

The 20-year-old, from Whitburn, has been working in the Ocean Road takeaway and restaurant since completing his A-levels last year.

But now dad Richard has promoted him to trainee manager, after it became clear he would carry on the family tradition, making him the fifth generation of the Colman family to enter into the fish and chip industry.

Richard Snr said: “I have no plans to retire any time soon, but it’s clear Richard is going to carry on the business to a fifth generation and I only thought it was right that he was given a promotion – he’s chipped in for long enough! It makes me really proud to think Richard will be looking after Colmans for the next generation.”

The former Argyle House and Sunderland High Sixth Form student says fish and chips are in his blood, and it never entered his head to do anything else.

“It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do,” said Richard, who earlier this year was voted one of the top eight young fish friers in the UK.

“When my friends were saying they wanted to be footballers or rock stars, I was saying I wanted to be a fish frier.

“I always had something to fall back on, because Colmans is a family business, but it was never my second choice; it was always my ambition and I’m really pleased I’ve been given this promotion.

“It’s an absolute privilege and I hope one day my children will take the business on to a sixth generation.”

Younger brother Dominic, 14, who attends Argyle House School in Sunderland, is already in training and helps out during holidays, just like Richard used to.

Richard Snr added: “Colmans has always prided itself on being family-run.

“I think the closeness of the staff is part of what makes us so great and I’ve been told time and time again that we have a fantastic atmosphere because of this in the restaurant and takeaway.

“It’s wonderful to know my son has officially joined the ranks and will be carrying on the Colman name and its traditions.”
