A NEW business boss has taken over popular tea rooms in South Tyneside.
Donna Carmichael is the new face in charge of Hillhead Tea Rooms, in Lizard Lane, Whitburn.
Previous owner Margaret Stewart has stepped aside to make way for Mrs Carmichael, who said she is “thrilled” to be running her first business.
She said: “Margaret was my first-ever boss, taking me on when she ran The Old Smithy in South Shields town centre.
“She asked me last year if I wanted to take over the business, and I was really pleased to become the boss of my first business, which recently marked its 11th birthday.
“But Margaret is still living in the farm next door, so she’s never far away. I previously worked as a head chef, but Margaret was always a great support.
“Plus, all nine staff are still working at Hillhead Tea Rooms, so it’s great to have everyone we know still working in the business.
Hillhead Tea Rooms has established a large and loyal clientele with its wide range of home-cooked food, from mince and dumplings to quiches and salad dishes.
Mrs Carmichael, 33, a married mum with a three-year-old son, Dylan, added: “We still get all our regulars coming in for meals, but we are also seeing lots of new faces.
“There is a caravan site nearby and that brings in customers, and basically I just want to continue with what has always been a successful business.
“We aim to keep interesting food on the menu and advertising in the Gazette and through Facebook helps to spread the word about the tea rooms.”
