A CHRISTMAS shopping fair is set to get tills jingling and aid a retail revival in South Shields.
The three-day festival will run in the Market Square from Friday, December 6.
Event organisers are hoping to attract businesses from across the region to get into the festive spirit and take a stall in the town.
The call has gone out to firms selling everything from decorations and gifts to accessories and food stuffs to set up in South Shields and increase the variety of potential presents on offer to shoppers.
The fair is being organised by South Tyneside Council and Groundwork South Tyneside.
Coun Alan Kerr, the local authority’s deputy leader, said: “The area around South Shields market is always extremely busy, particularly around Christmas.
“And we hope hosting a special three-day fair will not only help businesses maximise seasonal sales, but will also introduce consumers to products they may not normally be able to get hold of in the town centre.”
Among those already signed up is designer Tina Hamilton, owner of the Distinctive Designs Boutique at The Honest Lawyer Hotel, Durham, which sells jewellery, handbags and bespoke shoes.
She said: “Our accessories are ideal for the party season and, while we expect the store in Durham to be busy, the seasonal market offers us the ideal opportunity to reach a new audience and cater for those who can’t necessarily travel to us.”
The fair will be open from 2pm to 6pm on Friday, December 6, 10am to 5pm on Saturday, December 7, and 10am to 4pm on Sunday, December 8.
