SOUTH Tyneside firefighters joined a 24-hour walkout today as part of a long-running national dispute with the Government over pensions.
Members of a crew at South Shields Community Fire Station, on John Reid Road, completed their shift at 9am today.
And there will be no further crews operating from the station until 9am tomorrow.
In the meantime, a contingency crew has been put in place and is working from Hebburn Fire Station.
Another strike is planned on Sunday, June 22, in the row over changes to pensions and retirement age.
Brigades have urged people to take extra care around the home, especially if they are drinking alcohol while watching the opening game of the World Cup tonight.
