Store celebrates its 25th anniversary

SPECIAL CAKE ... Tracey Tough celebrating Asda Boldons 25th birthday.

A BIRTHDAY celebration proved to be a piece of cake for shop staff celebrating 25 years of trading.

For Asda staff tucked into two giant cakes to mark the milestone anniversary of the superstore’s opening.

And it was an especially poignant day for 46 workers who have been at the Boldon Colliery outlet since it opened in 1987.

One, Jan Dodson, 52, who has risen from shelf stacker to management, said: “I was here on the first day, and I still really enjoy my work.

“Back then I was just a young girl, and didn’t for a second imagine I’d be here 25 years later.

“But it’s been a lot of fun, and I’ve met some very nice people – we are all friends now.” The lucky 46 have each been given a £300 bonus, an extra week’s holiday and a bouquet of flowers.

They will also be treated to a plush lunch at Asda headquarters in Leeds.

About 80 staff and dozens of customers joined in the special in-store celebrations to mark the birthday, which also included children’s face painting.

General manager Sue Cooper said: “It was a fun day, and the perfect way to mark such a wonderful anniversary.

“Asda at Boldon has been a great success story, and we are looking forward to the next 25 years.

“The cakes were huge, and it was nice to see some of our customers tucking in with us.”
