UP FOR AWARD ... Cheria Raw has been nominated for Child of Achievement at Pride 2014.

A TEENAGER described as an “outstanding individual” gives up her spare time to help others.

Cheria Raw, 16, volunteers at the Sue Ryder charity shop, in The Nook, South Shields, and goes above and beyond to help people.

Now the pupil of Harton Technology College, of South Shields, has been put forward for the Child of Achievement award in this year’s Pride of South Tyneside.

She was nominated for the accolade, which is sponsored by Northumbrian Water, by reigning Young Performers of The Year, The Waiters.

Singer and guitarist Adam Tait, 18, said: “Cheria is an outstanding individual. Alongside her school work, she volunteers at a local cancer awareness charity shop and does everything she can to help others around her.

“Cheria lost her mam at a young age but has not let that stop her giving her all to the community.”

Cheria first found her interest in charity work when she signed up to Young Carers South Tyneside and became a carer for her poorly mum, Rosina, who passed away in 2010 from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a lung condition.

She said: “I started volunteering with the young carers because when I was little, I was a young carer for my mam. I decided I wanted to do more charity work so I started volunteering at the shop. I really enjoy it. I love getting to meet lots of new people and I love being able to chat to the customers and giving something back to the community, I just love it.”

She added: “It feels absolutely amazing to be nominated for this award. It was such a surprise, the lads even pulled me up on stage at one of their gigs to announce that they’d done it and I couldn’t believe it, but I can’t thank them enough.

“I don’t do it for the recognition but it was really nice of the lads to show that they appreciate me for doing it.”

Entries for the Pride of South Tyneside Awards are now closed. The prize ceremony will be held at the Quality Hotel in Witney Way, Boldon Colliery, on Thursday, June 12.
