Chart-toppers Blue to play free South Shields show

MUSIC lovers can “All Rise” to welcome hit boy band Blue as they prepare to headline a free South Tyneside concert this summer.

The chart-topping foursome, who have just released their fourth studio album, Roulette, will be performing live at Bents Park, South Shields, on Sunday, July 14.

The concert, which forms part of the South Tyneside Summer Festival 2013, will feature all of the band’s greatest hits, including number ones Too Close and If You Come Back, as well as their latest single, Hurt Lovers.

The group, made up of Antony Costa, Duncan James, Lee Ryan and Simon Webbe, formed in 2000, and saw their first three albums peak at No1 in the UK charts.

Blue represented the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011 with their song, I Can, coming in 11th place.

And earlier this year, they took part in ITV2’s The Big Reunion, which saw them reform, along with other groups such as Liberty X, Atomic Kitten and 5ive.

Also on the bill are British R&B group The Honeyz, who rose to fame in the late 90s, with hits such as
Finally Found and The End of The Line.

They will be supported by South Shields singer Abi Garrido and pop band The Waiters, who were named Young Performers of the Year at the Pride of South Tyneside Awards in 2012 and 2013 respectively. Coun Alan Kerr, deputy leader of festival organiser South Tyneside Council, said: “Blue have been part of the British music scene for more than a decade, and we’re delighted that fans will have the opportunity to see them performing their greatest hits free as part of the South Tyneside Summer Festival 2013.”

Blue’s open-air performance, one of three free concerts planned for Bents Park, is part of the South Tyneside Summer Festival’s three-month programme of live music and family events, which runs across South Shields from June until the end of August.

Other acts set to appear at this year’s event include Toploader and The South on Sunday, July 21, and 80s icon Rick Astley plus The Christians on Sunday, July 28.

The gigs will also feature a host of North East bands and emerging talent.

l In addition to the free gigs, Bents Park will also be the venue for Sound Waves 2013 on Sunday, August 25, which will be headlined by McFly and also feature South Shields X Factor champion Joe McElderry.

Tickets for Sound Waves 2013 are now on sale priced at £20 each.
