a South Tyneside chippy is celebrating after being named as one of the best in the country.

Colman’s in South Shields has been named in Fry Magazine’s 50 best fish and chip shops of 2014.

The Ocean Road restaurant and takeaway is the only business in the region to make the trade magazine’s list for the second year on the trot.

Owner Richard Ord said: “We are delighted to make the Fry Magazine list, and to do it for the second year running is a real plus.

“Almost 500 shops from the length and breadth of the UK entered this competition, and to be picked out is confirmation that we really do strive to be the best we possibly can.

“The feedback we had from the judges was wonderful to read, and we look forward to their return next year, when we hope we can improve on that again.”

All shops considered for the list were subject to a mystery-dining visit carried out by an independent company.

More than 40 aspects of each business were assessed, including the quality of fish and chips, staff presentation, front-of-house hygiene and customer service.

All the shops that entered the competition – now in its second year – receive a copy of their mystery dining sheet, providing them with feedback, and the top 50 also receive a certificates to display in their shops.
