Cinema’s restaurant extension gets go-ahead

APPROVED ... two new restaurants are to open at Cineworld.

APPROVED ... two new restaurants are to open at Cineworld.

TWO new restaurants will soon be premiered at South Tyneside’s main cinema site.

The council’s planning committee yesterday gave the go-ahead for the extension of Cineworld in Abingdon Way, Boldon Colliery.

Some concern was expressed over the potential for littering and extra traffic congestion as a result of the proposal.

But members were swayed by the dozens of new jobs which will be created by the application from the X-Leisure group.

The outlets are to be located on each flank of the front elevation of the existing cinema. The applicants have not yet revealed which outlets will be created.

But restaurants already based close to the Cineworld complex are Pizza Hut, McDonald’s and Frankie and Benny’s, in addition to The Storybook pub.

Labour’s Coun Sylvia Spraggon, who represents Whitburn and Marsden, said: “This is a positive move that will create more jobs. I would move the application.”

And Coun Allan West, Labour for Westoe, also endorsed the application.

He said: “These restaurants will be aimed at people visiting the cinema – it’s somewhere cinema-goers can go before or after seeing a film.”

A report to the committee said: “The proposal from X-Leisure Limited also includes revisions to the car park, as the extensions would partly encroach into it, and these would enable the provision of an additional 21 spaces, so there would be 472 spaces overall.

“The proposal is acceptable in terms of its layout, scale and design, impact on the general character of the area, amenities of neighbours and highway safety.

“It therefore accords to the local development framework policies to be taken into account, and there are no material considerations that would indicate an assessment to the contrary.”
