The big-hearted driver led the way after spotting the endangered dog on the A1 Western Bypass, near Westerhope, at about 10am this morning.

The terrified German Shepherd was running up and down both carriageways, darting between slow moving traffic, before it eventually crawled underneath a large HGV.

The quick-thinking driver then got out of his cab and brought the animal to safety before calling in police.

Motor patrol officers have now taken the animal to a vets where it will be scanned for a microchip to try and reunite the petrified pooch with its owner. Acting Inspector Steve Minnikin said: "The HGV driver deserves a lot of praise because these kind of incidents always have the potential to cause a fatal accident. "Due to his quick thinking we were able to make sure that didn't happen and that the dog was brought to safety before it was hit by a passing car. "Unfortunately the driver left the scene before we were able to give him a proper thank you so we don't know his name.

"If he does see this and wants to get in touch then I'm sure the owners will also want to pass on their thanks. "It looks like the animal has a microchip so we're optimistic that we can reunite it with its owner. In the mean time it's been happily sharing my sandwhich and sipping on a bowl of water." Officers remain in patrol in the area after reports of a second dog on the side of the carriageway. That animal has not yet been located so motorists are advised to take care. If you see the animal and feel it has the potential to cause an accident then contact police on 101 quoting log 266 28/06/16.
