South Shields school celebrates double hockey success

A South Shields primary school is celebrating double success at hockey.

St Bede’s RC Primary in Claypath Lane became South Tyneside Hockey Champions in both the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 competitions.

In the Year 3/4 event, the pupils came out on top in the event at Boldon School which included 26 teams. The youngsters won all four of their group games with Alyasa Uddin, Maddison Hart and Joseph Wood frequently on the scoresheet. Heidi Whitfield and Ava Elliott were in good form in defence. After a convincing win in the semi-final, St Bede’s drew 3-3 with St. Aloysius in the final. The game went into extra-time with St Bede’s scoring the ‘golden goal’ to lift the cup. Hayden Buckham was the goal-scoring hero scoring all four for St Bede’s.

The St Bede’s Year 5/6 team won all six of their games in the Year 5/6 District Hockey Championships. scoring 26 goals and only conceding three. Captain Josh Camm said, “It was great to learn how to play hockey and a lot of fun to play in a local competition.” The title-winning team also included Daniel Ellwood, Nick Campbell, Jake Waters, Shreya Bhardwaj (vice-Captain), Sophie Rowland, Ella Wood and Megan Tooley.

Both teams went on to represent South Tyneside in the Tyne and Wear Hockey Finals at The Parks Sports Complex, in North Tyneside, and reached the semi-finals.

Teacher and coach Brian McVittie said: “Both teams played fantastically in becoming District Champions in their respective age groups. They also gave a wonderful account of themselves in the Tyne and Wear Finals.”
