PERFUME worth £1,000 has been recovered by police acting on a tip-off from CCTV camera operators in South Tyneside.

Officers were called to Waterloo Square, in South Shields, yesterday afternoon, after reports about a man who was acting suspiciously.

Police discovered a man with a bag filled with perfume, believed to have been stolen from the nearby Debenhams store.

He was arrested on suspicion of theft and is now helping police with inquiries.

The arrest comes as police urge shop staff and businesses to step up their security ahead of the Christmas shopping rush.

The reminder comes after a window was damaged in Queen Street.

The property was also searched by thieves on the hunt for things to steal.

A business in Ocean Road was also broken into, after criminals smashed the lock off a back door. They escaped with cash.

Anyone who would like crime prevention advice is asked to contact their neighbourhood policing team on 101.
