AN alcoholic stole a bottle of booze from a South Tyneside shop because he was “desperate for a drink”.
Craig Stewart was caught on CCTV taking the £5 bottle of wine from Asda in Station Road, Hebburn.
When the footage was shown to police officers, one recognised the 33-year-old.
Stewart, of Westminster Crescent, Hebburn, pleaded guilty to theft at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.
Paul Donay, prosecuting, said: “He was seen picking up the bottle and leaving without paying for it.
“He was recognised by an officer who arrested him.
“When he was shown the pictures of him he said it was him, he was drunk and would have been desperate for a drink.”
Richard Rodger, defending, said: “I’ve told him that he is killing himself with drink.”
Magistrates’ adjourned the case until October 31 for the probation service to prepare a report about Stewart.
He was granted bail until then on the condition that he lives at the address given to court.
