A THIEF was caught on CCTV stealing booze from a South Tyneside shop.
Craig Stewart was spotted taking the £4.99 bottle of wine from Asda in Station Road, Hebburn.
Staff showed the footage of the theft to police officers, who recognised the 33-year-old and arrested him.
Stewart, of Westminster Crescent, Hebburn, pleaded guilty to theft at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.
Glenda Beck, prosecuting, said: “It was 5pm on July 9 when staff in Asda saw the defendant pick up a bottle of wine and put it in his jacket before leaving.”
Richard Rodger, defending, said: “He has a long-standing drink problem.
“On this occasion he was drunk and needed alcohol so took it.
“He didn’t cause any trouble with the staff while doing so but he did steal it.”
Judge Jonathan Radway adjourned the case until October 8 for the probation service to prepare a report about Stewart.
He was granted bail until then on condition that he lives and sleeps at the address given to court and does not enter any Asda store.
