TOWN Hall bosses say they are “extremely disappointed” after a popular Christmas decoration was damaged in South Shields town centre.

An ornamental reindeer, part of a Christmas decoration display at St Hilda’s Church, in Market Place, broke under a man’s weight when he allegedly tried to climb on top of it.

A council spokesman said: “We were extremely disappointed to hear about the damage to the Christmas decorations, but there is no way that one mindless act will detract from a highly successful Christmas programme which has brought thousands of people into South Shields town centre.

“The lights and decorations were introduced to attract more visitors to South Tyneside over the festive season, and we have received fantastic feedback from residents and visitors alike.”

The offence took place at about 1.30am on Saturday, December 14.

A police spokesman said: “The man was drunk and tried to climb and sit on the ornamental reindeer. It broke under his weight.”

A 26-year-old man has been arrested and charged with criminal damage.

He will appear before South Tyneside Magistrates on February 4.
