Armed robber demanded cigarettes at off licence

POLICE are appealing for information following an attempted robbery at an off licence.

It happened at 3.20pm yesterday at the Liquor Lodge, on Wenlock Road, South Shields.

A man entered the store armed with a Stanley-type knife and demanded cigarettes from a member of staff. However, the offender left empty handed after his demands were refused.

He is described as wearing dark clothing and made off from the scene on a bike in the direction of Bainbridge Avenue.

Anyone who witnessed the attempted robbery or who saw a man in dark clothing riding a bike in the area before or after is asked to contact police.
