A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a blaze at a house in South Tyneside.

A police probe was launched after the fire broke out at a terraced house in St Jude’s Terrace, South Shields, on Wednesday evening.

No one was injured in the attack, in which it is believed letters at the bottom of the stairs were set alight.

Police and crews from South Shields Fire Station were called to the street.

The blaze caused only minor damage, but police believe it may have been started deliberately.

One resident on the street said: “I was told of a fire at the bottom of the stairs, caused by some mail being set alight.

Witnesses

“There is a man who lives there. I think he is in his 30s.”

A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson.

He has been bailed pending further inquiries.

Northumbria Police are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously or leaving the area at about 7pm on Wednesday.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “Police investigating an incident of arson at a house in South Tyneside are now appealing for witnesses.

“The incident happened in St Jude’s Terrace, South Shields, at 7pm on Wednesday, December 11. No one was injured.

“We are appealing for anyone who was in the area and saw anyone acting suspiciously or anyone leaving the area at around 7pm on Wednesday to contact us. Minor damage was caused to the property.” Anyone with information can call police on 101, extension 69191, quoting log number 988 of 11/12/13.
