POLICE are appealing for the public’s help to trace people who may be able to help with unsolved crimes in South Tyneside.

CCTV images of people police need to speak to after crimes across the borough have been released in an effort to identify those involved.

The appeal comes during Northumbria Police’s Operation Soundwave, aimed at tackling opportunist thieves and burglars across the force.

Chief Inspector Sarah Pitt from South Tyneside Area Command said: “The majority of the offences are thefts from shops, and we continue to carry out operations to tackle those involved in opportunist crimes such as this across the borough.

“More than 75 per cent of all shoplifting offences are detected, and for those that aren’t we will release CCTV images to the public in an effort to trace those who can help with our inquiries.

“The message is clear - if you steal, the likelihood is you will get caught. I’d appeal for anyone who recognises those people in the images to get in touch with police as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191, for the attention of South Tyneside Area Command, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
