Couple attacked with metal bar in their own home

ROBBERS who attacked a South Shields couple in their own home are today being hunted by police.

The incident, which officers are treating as an aggravated burglary, happened at 11.45pm last night in Fox Avenue, Simonside.

Two men gained entry t before assaulting the male occupant with a metal bar.

An unknown substance was also sprayed in the woman occupant’s face before the men made off.

The man and woman were taken to South Tyneside District Hospital for treatment.

Neither was seriously injured, and they have since been released.

The only description available of the intruders is that they were white and wearing dark clothing.

Chief Inspector Brian Walker, from South Tyneside Area Command, said: “We have stepped up patrols in the area to offer reassurance to residents.

“Thankfully the occupants of this address weren’t seriously injured, but have clearly been left shaken by their ordeal.

“I would urge anyone who saw the men entering or leaving this address around the time of the incident to come forward, as their information could prove vital to our investigations.

“Anyone with any concerns in their neighbourhood should speak to officers on patrol or contact them via phone or our website.”
