Couple jailed for horror attack on teen

TERRIFYING ATTACK ... Faye Robson, aged 19, and Kyle Calvert, 23.

A SOUTH Tyneside couple are behind bars today after a terrifying attack on a teenager.

Karrina Bates was beaten unconscious, jabbed with a knife and urinated on during the ordeal by Faye Robson and Kyle Calvert, who she thought were her friends.

Her body was covered in bruises and painful cuts and her teeth were damaged after the gruesome assault.

Newcastle Crown Court heard that after the attack, which happened while there was a two-year-old child in the room, the blood-soaked walls were hurriedly covered with paint before the police arrived.

The cruel couple, of Westmorland Court, Hebburn, who had a child together three months ago, sobbed as they were put behind bars yesterday.

Prosecutor Robert Adams told the court the violence started while Miss Bates, who was 17 at the time ,was having a drink with the couple and some others at Robson’s house last January, when she lived in Sunderland.

Mr Adams said: “The complainant was sitting on the bed.

“Kyle Calvert came over to her and punched her in the face twice.

“There was no real explanation for this act on his part. She fell to the side of the bed.

“When she was on the floor, the defendant Robson joined in. She was pulling her hair, kicking her to the side and back.

“At this point Calvert was watching, saying ‘go on, kill her’.

“As she lay on the floor trying to protect herself and get up, she saw Robson reach under a coffee table and pull out a knife which she used to scratch and dig into her thigh.

“She is said to have held the knife to her throat, saying to the others ‘Should I do it?’

“They continued to punch her and she could hear someone make the comment ‘you’ve killed her’.

“At this stage, as she lay there, Calvert got his penis out and urinated on her, over her head and body.”

The court heard the terrified teenager managed to flee the house and alert police.

She said in her victim impact statement: “I honestly believed I was going to die in that house that day.

“I still have nightmares of being attacked, again and again. I still suffer numbness and pain because of what they did.”

Calvert, 23, and Robson, 19, admitted assault at an earlier hearing.

Judge Roger Thorn sentenced Calvert to 20 months and Robson to 18 months behind bars. Both have previous convictions for violence.

The judge said: “She thought she was going to die, and having heard the descriptions of what happened, I am not at all surprised.

“She has been left with post-traumatic stress disorder, which involves continuing panic attacks, nightmares and flashbacks.”

Andrew Finlay, defending, said Calvert is “at a loss” to explain what went on that night, and has a different outlook on life since the birth of his child.

Mr Finlay said: “He now has something to lose by his offending.”

Lewis Kerr, also defending, said Robson has made “significant steps” to changing her lifestyle after giving birth.

It's a sick world some people can do that to another women. A man to do it to a 17 year old girl is cowardly. Sick sick people who think others owe them something instead of taking charge of their own life. People like this should be put down like a dog and kicked out the gene pool. To think some poor child now might discover her mother and father were a waste of human life is tragic

There are many more like these two on our streets and their offspring will grow up to be the same, if not worse. It's time that scum like this should have their children taken off them so that the child can have a decent start in life. Before the do gooders pipe up about human rights, what thought did these two give to their victim's rights? Super vile vermin!

I'm shocked at the pathetic sentences these two scumbags received, 18 months??? For what I and most other sane people would consider attempted murder. They've probably already served time while on probabtation, and will more than likely be free to terrorise the streets before autumn. Their baby will most definitely be put into permanent foster care or adopted. This is the only light in this story. What these two need is a good beating, these animals will only understand that. Let's hope that they get what's comming to them, sadly I fear it'll be play stations and pool tables.

Hope their kid is taken into safe custody because this thuggish couple will re-offend when they are released. Next time it could be their innocent child - and don't tell me that they couldn't do such a thing as nothing is beneath them

The sentence should have been numbered in years, not months. Still, nice to see worthless trash off the streets, even if for a short time.

A pathetic sentence for what was a horrific attack, the girl said she was convinced she was going to die at the hands of those creatures, I agree with susan5, think 10 yrs would be more fitting, instead these two lowlifes will be looking forward to spending this Christmas at home, Judges are not on the side of victims.
