POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a firework was put through the letterbox of a South Tyneside business.
The incident happened between 7.45pm and 8pm on Monday, at Body Art Tattoo in Dean Road, South Shields.
The firework damaged the letterbox and door of the shop.
There were people inside at the time, but no one was injured.
Neighbourhood Inspector Peter Sutton said: “The consequences of this incident could have been far worse, and it is lucky that no one was injured.
“Playing with fireworks in this way is completely irresponsible, and we will carry out inquiries to find those responsible.
“As we draw nearer to Bonfire Night we want to reiterate that fireworks and bonfires can be dangerous, and can injure and kill people if not handled responsibly.”
Officers are appealing for witnesses to the incident, and asking anyone who was in the area and saw what happened or saw anything suspicious to contact them.
Any witnesses can contact police on 101 ext 69191, Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
