RARE instruments stolen from a South Tyneside theatre have been found and returned to their owners.

A cello and violin belonging the European Orchestra Ensemble were taken from the Customs House in Mill Dam South Shields, before a concert on Saturday.

A Lorenz Neudorf 1878 violin and a Muller cello were stolen from the Customs House in South Shields on Saturday at about 4.45pm.

They belonged to members of The European Orchestral Ensemble who performed at the Mill Dam venue that night.

A 19-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman were arrested yesterday on suspicion of burglary in connection to the theft.

They have now been bailed while police investigate further.

The instruments were found by police officers in a second hand shop outside South Tyneside following a tip-off.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, extension 69191 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
