A MAN was left seriously injured after being attacked in a South Tyneside street.

The 35-year-old suffered a head injury and cuts to his fingers when he was attacked in South Eldon Street, South Shields, on Friday night.

He was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, where his condition was described last night as critical but stable.

The man was found in the street at about 9.40pm and the road was closed off as police investigated.

Officers said initial inquiries indicated the man was attacked at about 9.20pm, as he was walking home.

Detective Inspector Andy Fairlamb said: “We would like to hear from anyone who might have seen the assault or any other suspicious activity in the South Eldon Street area at about 9.20pm.”

Anyone with information should contact police on the 101 non-emergency number.
