A MAN accused of assaulting a police station detention officer has appeared in court.

Mark Elliot is said to have spilled a cup of water over the female officer while at the station on May 18.

The 25-year-old denied the charge when he appeared before South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard that he had asked for a cup of water while in a station cell, and a cup of water was spilled onto the officer as she passed it to him through a cell door hatch.

David Forrrester, defending, said: “While incarcerated, he asked for a glass of water.

“The detention officer brought him a cup of water, it was knocked onto her as she passed it through the door hatch.

“He denies it was deliberate or reckless. He says it was an accident.”

Elliot, of Amble Avenue, South Shields, will be back at the court for trial on October 7.
