A MAN was caught with cannabis by police when they visited his home on another matter.

Officers had been called to Howe Street, Hebburn, after reports of a disturbance – but found drugs in Christopher Wilson’s property.

Wilson, now of Kent Avenue, Hebburn, pleaded guilty to a charge of possessing cannabis at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The offence took place on January 14.

Paul Anderson, prosecuting, said: “Police attended Howe Street in relation to a disturbance.

“When they gained entry, they discovered some drugs in the property.

“Wilson said he smokes the cannabis himself.”

David Hatfield, defending, said: “Mr Wilson not only pleaded guilty at the first opportunity, but also made no attempt to dissemble anything when interviewed at the police station.

“He handed over the tin containing the cannabis. He says he has learnt a lesson from being in court.”

Magistrates gave the 44-year-old a six-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £15.
