A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of murder after another man died in a house fire in Gateshead.
Fire crews rescued two men from a blaze in Redemarsh, in Gateshead’s Leam Lane Estate.
A 53-year-old man suffered substantial burns and was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment but later died as a result of his injuries.
A 45-year-old man also needed hospital treatment for smoke inhalation.
Police were called to the fire, which happened at about 6.35pm on Tuesday, to launch an investigation.
Northumbria Police last night confirmed a 45-year-old man had been arrested in suspicion of murder and is currently helping detectives with their inquiries.
Detective Chief Inspector Christina Barrett, from Northumbria Police’s Major Crime Team, said: “The investigation is in its very early stages and we are working with the fire service to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the fire.
“Early indications are that the fire was started inside the property.
“We would like to speak to anyone who thinks they may have information that could help us with our enquiries.
“Anyone who knows those inside the property and who may have seen them earlier in the day should also come forward as this could help with our investigation.
“Officers are in the area to offer reassurance to residents and anyone with concerns should speak to them.”
