Northumbria Police have launched a murder investigation after a woman was fatally stabbed.
At 3:50pm yesterday, police received a report from the ambulance service that two people had been taken to hospital after being assaulted in Stanhope Street in the Arthurs Hill area of Newcastle.
They both suffered stab wounds and were taken to hospital for treatment.
A 25-year-old man remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition at this time, but a 27-year-old woman has died as a result of her injuries.
Two men aged 25 and one aged 22 have been arrested in connection with the incident and are currently in police custody.
Officers remain at the scene last night and a section of Stanhope Road was closed off to allow for enquiries to be carried out.
The investigation is in its very early stages and although three arrests have been made detectives are very keen to hear from anyone who was in the area of Stanhope Street around the time of the incident and who might have seen or heard anything to contact them on 101 quoting reference number 702 17/10/16.
