A PAEDOPHILE who tried to kill himself when his sickening crimes were exposed has been put behind bars.
Colin Burnett slashed his wrists after his schoolgirl victim bravely revealed what he had done to her.
He apologised for what he had done to the youngster in a note left at the attempted suicide scene.
At Newcastle Crown Court yesterday, the 69-year-old was jailed for three years.
Judge James Goss, QC, told him: “Offending of this kind does have very significant effects, sometimes lifelong effects upon people who are abused in this way.
“These are serious offences for which there must be a sentence of imprisonment.”
Burnett, of Nolan Hall, Jarrow, had admitted sexual assault charges.
The court heard the pensioner admitted what he had done when he was confronted.
Neil Pallister, prosecuting, said: “The defendant made an attempt at suicide by cutting his wrists.
“A note was recovered from his car which in a sense said he was sorry and ashamed for what he had done.”
Graeme Cook, defending, said Burnett is full of remorse and still vulnerable after the suicide attempt.
The court heard Burnett has never been in trouble before.
He must sign the sex offenders’ register and abide by the terms of a sexual offences prevention order for life.
